Let me just start out by saying I'm not looking for a replica debate.

Sorry this is going to be long. I just want there to be no misunderstanding. Ok now on to the questions.

Over the last few months my sister has been getting into Lolita. She loves Classic, but thinks sweet is fun too. a little while ago she text'd me asking about replica's. I told her that that is WAY to loaded a question for a text. Last night we got together and I showed her a lot of stuff about Lolita and explained both sides of the replica debate, so she could make her own decision.

My views of replicas is that I don't care for them, but don't hate them. My views are 100% apathetic towards the moral and legal points of the issue and lies completely with the quality. I came to this decision myself by buying 2 replicas 2nd hand a while ago on the comm sales(I wanted to see what all the fuss was about). I got them and decided for the most part, they aren't for me.

For this reason I couldn't care less what others wear. As long as they look nice, it doesn't matter to me where their clothes come from. I'm normally apalled by apathy in general, but I just can't make myself care about replicas.

ANYWAY. I also told my sister about the lolita panal at Anime Banzai and how much I learned from it the first time I went and so now she might be going to the panal. However this means she will be borrowing my clothes, she hasn't decided 100% what she wants to borrow but she really likes one of the replicas that's just been hanging in my closet.

So my question is this; would it make anyone feel UNCOMFORTABLE if someone were to wear a replica to this panel, or a meet up in general? Would any of you be mean, refuse to socialize, etc with my sister? I know that we have a nice comm here but just hearing what some people think about replicas makes me worry for my sister. I don't want her to be harressed. I really want to know because this is a community, and it's important that everyone can be together cohesively.

Or maybe because it would be to a con that the atmosphere is more relaxed to you wouldn't care about wearing someone wearing a replica, but maybe not a meet up?(lol weird logic I know, but it's kinda how I feel about it for myself XD) really I'm just wondering how everyone feels about OTHER PEOPLE wearing replcas.

Also if the response is that people are 'ok' with people wearing whatever they want, I myself might wear a replica skirt my husband bought for me. (not knowing what it is, he just thought it was cute) because its the only blkxwht thing I have and my husband wants to wear a blkxwht kodona at the panel and I think it would be so cute to match him! <3

Ok and also, who is running the Lolita panel this year? I'm assumeing it will be Xen again since she always does a wonderful job. Does anyone want to plan a small meetup for about that time? maybe like just getting dinner together after the panel?

I look forward to you're responses. Really, I am looking for honesty here. Like I said I'm really apathetic towards the whole subject. If you don't feel comfortable with leaving a comment, feel free to PM me! Also, even if you don't see this post for a few weeks, still feel free to let me know how you feel if you want!

I don't like replica prints- I'd rather see an "x-inspired" print than a direct ripoff. But if you have one and you like it, wear it. (Also, bravo to you for making your own decision and not just jumping to one side of the fence or the other.) To me, there's a huge difference between buying a replica because you're curious or you didn't know and buying ONLY replicas because "OMGthey'resocheap!" I'm actually a bit amused by the lolis who get so passionately furious about replica prints but have a bunch of replica bags or shoes.

Honestly, I probably wouldn't know the difference between a replica and the real thing unless the quality was really bad.

Thank you!
Yeah like I said, I checked them out and decided not for me. It just made me realize 'what's the point?' if it's the print I like then I'll get the real thing and if I'm just looking to pad out my wardrobe then thats what Bodyline, F+F, Anna House, etc is for. Nice cheap options <3

Right. If something is your Holy Grail item, isn't part of the value saving and searching for it? And I do the same thing- brand for important stuff (to me) and Anna House or F+F for blouses, since they make them in my size. (Bodyline's are too narrow in the shoulders. *sigh*) And those three usually have some pretty cute prints of their own!

Personally not a big fan of replicas, but don't really care if other people wear them. It's hard enough finding other Lolitas in general, why alienate them over stupid things like that?

I've only met a couple of the people here, but they all seemed pretty cool and not too uptight about "Lolita rules". So I don't think your sister or you will get that much attention for wearing replicas.

Also, I have no idea about the panel, I'm guessing it'll be Xen as well. I have a table at the Artist Alley; so, I won't be able to go to that or any meet up after :< Unless there's some kind of meeting Friday evening, I'll kinda be stuck at my table. FFFT.

Thank you!
Yeah I know this is a pretty nice and mature comm so even when there are things we don't agree with everyone is still really nice.

Honestly I think I worried myself so much about it because about 2 months ago I descovered Btb, (Loli secrets), and the people on there are so mean I was really worried for my sister @_@

Thats so cool that you will be at the artist alley! I'll look for you! What kinds of things will you be selling?

Yeah, it kinda amazes me how mean people are, especially with such a small community like with Lolitas. But I suppose you'll always have em in a group no matter what :l

Ahaha, thanks! I'll just be selling prints and doing art commissions. I really want to start trying to make the craftier cute things, but I only just recently got more free time. So maybe next year?

I'm super looking forward to meeting everyone again, and hopefully we can have dinner/hang out? It seems like Friday evening's the best day for a couple of us?

Yeah it's definately looking like Friday would be the day to hang out. Of course finding a time might also be a problem since I'm pretty sure that peoples priority for the weekend will be centered around the con itself.

As for the food there are lots of (cheap) places within walking distance/close by the con, so that really shouldn't be too big a deal. The places I'm remembering off the top of my head are Panda Express and NYPD pizza.

Also I can't wait to see some of your drawings!

So my question is this; would it make anyone feel UNCOMFORTABLE if someone were to wear a replica to this panel, or a meet up in general? Would any of you be mean, refuse to socialize, etc with my sister?

I don't think I'd feel uncomfortable at all. There are many reasons why a person might have bought a replica (it was a gift given by someone who didn't know differently; it was sold to that person under the guise of a genuine article; the person isn't fully aware of the replica/brand divide or wasn't at the time they bought it; etc.) and those reasons aren't necessarily any of my business. Even if I was uncomfortable (and I seriously doubt I would be) that wouldn't stop me from being a decent person and trying to make them feel welcome.

Like others, my feelings on replicas are mixed. I definitely don't like it when a person or company rips off a design wholesale, logo and all. That's not cool and I wouldn't knowingly support that product through my purchase. I also feel strongly that the artists and designers I admire deserve my support. Even the most well-known lolita brands are teeny businesses, speaking in terms of size and production. This allows them to create a luxury product with high attention to detail. That's something special that I want to support. (And lolita clothing *is* a luxury item; once it's produced with cut-rate materials and poor production quality, one could argue that it's not even lolita anymore.)

That said, brand clothing doesn't fit me. Some of the brands I've ordered from/intend to order from have made replicas in the past and still probably produce some; here I'm specifically thinking of Dream of Lolita but I imagine some of the other TaoBao-based brands I've looked at also do replicas. I'll be honest - I get lost in all the prints. I'm secretly a bit concerned that I'd inadvertantly purchase a skirt or something with a design that's been entirely ripped off. "Inspired by" is fine; there was at least some creative effort made on the part of the brand and I can get it in a size that fits me. I can save my pennies and buy nice brand accessories instead of clothes and support the Japanese brands that way. And there are many TaoBao-based brands and indy designers doing incredible work.

So bottom line - what someone chooses to wear is their own business and they've made their choice for personal reasons, none of which I can know about; my opinion of what they've chosen to wear shouldn't be an obstacle to my being a decent person to them (and if it is, then it's me who has the problem).

And meet-up!! Yes, we should! I'll be there on Friday and Saturday (def. planning on showing up to Xen's panel) and will probably spend a good chunk of time in Artist Alley with a friend of mine. (And I'll be doing a panel on Fri. night which I guess I should mention.) Can't wait to see everyone!

Thank you!

Yeah I pretty much agree with everything you said, but like I said, I just don't have a lot of passion(?) behind it for me, hence the apathy. And I'm pretty sure because my sister is so new to all of this she doesn't have a opinion on the subject yet.

And yeah, lets see who else wants to get together and we could just have dinner or something. I don't care if it's Friday or Saturday, just for me to attend it will have to be in the evening.

Also, correct me if I'm wrong but did we meet at last years tea party? lol sorry I'm trying to place everyones LJ username to a face.

Friday evening is definitely better for me. And yes, we probably did. I'll probably remember you when I see you in person. :)
